205 Live Review 04/09/2019
205 Live Review: April 09th, 2019
Live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York
I bet you did not remember that 205 Live was on after SmackDown huh? Well guess what? IT IS! Yes, this episode of 205 Live comes just over 48 hours after a fantastic WrestleMania featuring a tremendous pre-show Cruiserweight Championship match between Buddy Murphy and Tony Nese, where we crowned a new champion in Nese. But the question is, where does the new champion go from here? Who will step up to the challenge? Who will get called up onto the 205 Live roster? All this on the post Mania edition of the hottest hour on television!
Match #1: Jack Gallagher (with Drew Gulak) vs. Humberto Carillo
The bell rings and Jack Gallagher applies an arm wrench on Humberto Carillo. Carillo reverses into an arm wrench of his own. The Gentleman then shows his tremendous grappling with and exchange of back and forth offense. Carillo gets caught while making a comeback and Gallagher hits a fireman’s carry onto the top rope. The Gentleman starts hammering down on Humberto and hits a surfboard knee jump for multiple two counts. He then applies a chin lock on Humberto. Carillo tries to fight back but Jack Gallagher hits a huge dropkick to weaken the new rookie. Humberto attempts a roll up but was unsuccessful. Carillo makes the comeback, giving it all he has got and hits a flying crossbody. He then hits a corkscrew moonsault on Gallagher on the outside. Carillo then disses Drew Gulak, who is on commentary and hits a flying dropkick. Carillo then hits a springboard arm drag. While Carillo attempts to go onto the top rope, Drew Gulak pushes him off, causing a disqualification. After beating down Humberto Carillo post-match, Gallagher saves Humberto with a huge headbutt to Gulak.
Result: Humberto Carillo via disqualification
My Thoughts:
Chaotic turn of events here! We see the break of the Submission Commission unfold before our very eyes. To be honest, tough love is tough love folks. It is a way of getting better throughout time! Most importantly, it is a process. Besides my bias opinion, I really think the face turn of Jack Gallagher will be interesting to see from this point forward! How will this play out in this storyline? How will him and Carillo co-exist against Gulak?
Backstage segment: Drake Maverick, Oney Lorcan, Cedric Alexander
Drake Maverick invites Oney Lorcan to talk about next week’s Superstar Shakeup. Cedric interrupts and asks about their match next week. Maverick confirms it. Oney then tells Cedric that he does not own the division and states that he is still here,
Match #2: Cruiserweight Championship Rematch from WrestleMania – Buddy Murphy vs. Tony Nese
The bell rings and we have a dual cheer battle from the fans between Nese and Murphy. The two former gym partners square off by locking up. Tony drives Murphy into the corner turnbuckle, which leads to a huge slap. Murphy gets pissed off and applies a headlock. Tony hits a huge irish whip/elbow strike combination for a two count. Murphy then hits a huge punch which leads to Nese hitting a Premier Combination for another two count. While reversing Nese, Murphy lands awkwardly on his right knee for the referee to check on him. While the referee was distracted, he played possum and throws Tony into the ringspot. The onslaught would then begin as he throws Tony into the barricade at ringside. This would then lead into him throwing Nese into the announcers table. Murphy would then set up Nese for a knee strike and a brain buster for two counts. Nese hits a huge right hand and us taken over the top rope. Murphy hits a tremendous suicide springboard dive. This would then lead into a double knee meteorota. After all these pinfall attempts, he then tries to slow down Nese with a huge headlock. Nese breaks free but Murphy hits a springboard ddt onto the ropes. The former cruiserweight champion attempts a high flying move, Nese catches him in the middle, sending him to the outside. Nese then hits a corkscrew moonsault onto Murphy. This would then lead to Nese throwing Murphy into the announcer’s desk yet again. The two competitors make it back into the ring. Nese hits a hurricanarana for another two count. Nese would then hit a huge moonsault for another two count. Nese then hits a pumphandle slam for another two count. Both men are beat and exhausted but only one can be champion. Murphy hits a huge powerbomb which stops The Premier Athlete’s momentum. After multiple slaps to the face, Nese hits Murphy with a corner german suplex. Murphy then hits a huge shining wizard to send both men down and out at ringside. After Murphy struggles to put Tony into the powerbomb onto the announce table, Nese reverses into a ruthless back body drop! Both men make it back to the ring before the count of 10. After multiple strikes back and forth, Murphy hits Murphy’s Law but is only good for two. Tony Nese comes back and hits two back to back Running Nese’s for the pinfall victory.
Result: Tony Nese via pinfall, STILL CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION
My Thoughts:
What an incredible cruiserweight championship match! I believe the rematch was better than the original bout at WrestleMania, but that’s just me. Both men put their bodies on the line to get the respect of the crowd and I think they well-deservingly earned it! I mean, when you get 205 chants from the audience who is probably exhausted from a four day weekend of wrestling, that is saying something! This just proves that no matter what, 205 can prove to deliver and then some on a weekly consistent basis.
Final Thoughts:
Considering that this episode of 205 Live consisted of two matches, I think that these two matches by themselves made the entire show beautiful! When you look at the first bout between Gallagher and Humberto, you can tell tensions were rising within the submission commission already. Despite that, both Gallagher and Humberto proved to the world why they are elite players in the 205 Live moniker. The feat of strength and high flying was like watching poetry in motion, even if I do plead the safe and sound, feet on the ground philosophy! I did not expect a disqualification finish though, seeing the aggressive side of Gulak intrigued me. I really think this will lead to Gulak coming back into the championship picture with his aggressive mantra, especially being owed a rematch with Nese after a screwy finish from the championship tournament earlier this year. Even looking at the main event what more is there to say other than Nese proved himself to be a fighting champion? This reign has been long overdue for quite some time but I am glad to see it come to full circle. Finally, there is something that commentator Vic Joseph said tonight that stuck with me. What happens when the superstar shakeup happens? Will we see more cruiserweights leave from the brand? Even with that said, it feels like next week is in jeopardy for the hottest hour on television. Will we see any other new roster members? With that said, thank you all for joining me for this week’s edition of 205 Live’s review! Remember, safe and sound, feet on the ground and do not sleep on the hottest show in entertainment!
