Match #1
Goldust & R-Truth vs The Ascension
Drake Younger is the ref for this! Konnor & Goldust lock up to start. Goldust hits an atomic drop and mocks Konnor. Konnor runs at Goldust but gets taken down with an armdrag. Truth gets the tag and works over Konnor until he gets flapjacked. Viktor gets the tag after punching Truth in the face and hits him with an uppercut. Viktor locks in a sleeper. Truth fights out and hits a spinning kick. Goldust gets the tag in and clothesline Viktor a couple times. He knocks Konnor off the apron. Ten punch by Goldust in the corner. Great powerslam by Goldust. Konnor breaks it up and Truth throws Konnor out of the ring. Viktor gets distracted by Truth and Goldust hits the Final Cut for the win.
Thoughts
I can’t really say it was a bad match, I mean it did everything it was supposed to do correctly. It was just extremely short and felt way too rushed to get everything in. And at this point there’s literally zero suspense when Ascension wrestle on this show. I believe they have two victories this year. The second that hot tag comes, you can start counting back from 60 seconds and the match will be over by the time you finish. I will say that Konnor’s black facepaint was really menacing and as a whole, he has a great look. I miss Viktor’s facepaint from last month when he was doing singles matches. I actually think this tag team is holding Viktor back. It’s a shame because I really enjoyed them in NXT but every week it seems more and more clear WWE has little faith in them.
We get a replay of the opening promo of Raw. Followed by a replay of Cena/Rollins. Isn’t this what the This Week in WWE program is for? Sort of wish they’d use more time of this show for wrestling and/or interviews.
Match #2
Jack Swagger vs Baron Corbin
Corbin kicks Swagger in the face but Swagger bounces right back by clotheslining Corbin out of the ring. Swagger sends Corbin into the apron but Corbin counters by throwing Swagger into the ring post. Corbin destroys the shoulder of Swagger across the ring post. Swagger irish whips Corbin out of the ring but Corbin quickly flies back in and clotheslines Swagger. I love that spot. Ziggler actually doing pretty well on commentary here. Corbin steps on Swagger’s face. Corbin traps Swagger’s arm and locks in the chinlock. Could big corner suplexes by Swagger before slamming Corbin to the ground. Swagger runs off the ropes and tries to clothesline Corbin but Swagger misses and Corbin hits the Deep Six. Corbin tries the slide out/slide in ring technique again but Swagger catches the leg and locks in the Patriot Lock for a brief few seconds. Swagger elbows Corbin in the head. Swagger Bomb for two! Swagger locks in the Patriot Lock in the middle of the ring. Corbin turns over and kicks Swagger a couple times but Swagger rolls him back over and keeps the hold locked in! Corbin finally gets to the ropes an drags himself out of the ring. Swagger brings him back in the ring but as he’s getting in himself, Corbin kicks him in the head and starts teeing off with elbows. Corbin throws Swagger in between the ropes, shoulder first into the ring post and follows it up with End of Days for the win.
Thoughts
This was another pretty good match between these two. I want to point out the fantastic selling from both of these guys. Swagger sells Corbin’s offense extremely well and Corbin’s selling of the ankle late in the match is great. There’s even a point where Corbin sells a Swagger elbow like it KO’d him. I think Swagger is the perfect veteran opponent for Corbin on these shows. You can tell the chemistry is there between them. I wouldn’t say it was as good as their Superstars match from last month, but it was pretty damn close. Also the Deep Six is a beautiful move.
Overall
Corbin/Swagger was pretty good while Ascension vs Golden Truth is more or less a waste of time. I really wish they’d give these matches a little bit more time though. Tonight’s action combined for 12 minutes of an hour long show. That’s a bit ridiculous, in my opinion. I’d understand if these guys were working double duty but I don’t see why Ascension/GT couldn’t go an extra five minutes and actually be able to tell a story or something. Oh well. I will say that Corbin vs Swagger is worth a watch for sure.
