NJPW Best of Super Juniors Night 3 and Night 4 Review 5/20/17 & 5/21/17
NJPW Best of Super Juniors Night 3 and Night 4
NJPW didn’t air these shows live and only uploaded the tournament shows from both nights. So I will only be able to review those. As a fan it is better as I don’t have to watch as much but as a reviewer I was confused but here we go the only matches that mattered. Also since they only put out tournament matches I decided to do both Day 3 and Day 4 for you guys, enjoy!
DAY 3
Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs ACH
This was a pretty good match between the two here, which really caught me off guard to be honest. Kanemaru worked a really good heel during the match and ACH got some good offense. I was rooting for ACH here but Kanemaru takes the win here. Can’t be mad after a solid match like they put on.
Match Rating: ***1/4
Tiger Mask vs KUSHIDA
Tiger did some good work here and it helps he is in there with perhaps the future Jushin Thunder Liger. KUSHIDA can work with just about anybody (he hasn’t worked with Taichi yet though so you never know). All around a good match here from both guys with Tiger Mask taking a surprising win leaving KUSHIDA without a win still in this tournament. Could this be the end of the road already for KUSHIDA’s aspirations of winning BOSJ? It’s too early to tell but this certainly isn’t how he wanted to start the tournament off.
Match Rating: ***1/4
El Desperado vs BUSHI
Day 3 has been full of solid match ups that are a fun time to watch but will get lost in shuffle in the grand scheme of things of the large amount of shows of the tournament. This is another one to that list as Desperado continues to impress in the tournament and BUSHI is of course pretty good so this was bound to be watchable. Desperado takes the win here after ripping off the mask
Match Rating: ***1/2
Rysuke Taguchi vs Volador Jr.
Again a solid match that will be forgotten. Volador really showed off in this one, not as sloppy as his last performance. Taguchi got a bit serious and it showed in a solid outing for him in this tournament. Taguchi takes the win here and ties himself with Desperado for the leader of the B Block. Just a fun little match here, nothing much just enjoyable wrestling
Match Rating: ***1/4
For Night 3 I think it was just a case of solid matches but nothing really standing out being must watch. Like sure if you like any of these guys check em out out but nothing you gotta go out of your way to see.
Day 4
Will Ospreay vs TAKA Michinoku
This was very good and slowed down for a Will Ospreay match. TAKA really did good stuff here with young William. Good chemistry between the two but it is like the matches from Day 3 where it was solid but not stand out. Ospreay takes the win here, giving himself 4 points.
Match Rating: ***1/4
Jushin Thunder Liger vs Marty Scurll
Really good work here with Liger showing why he is the best Junior Heavyweight of all time and Scurll captivating the NJPW crowd again with not only his wrestling but his antics. Marty Scurll takes the win here and gets himself up to 4 points as well which makes it a three way tie for first place in the A Block (so far)
Match Rating: ***3/4
Taichi vs Dragon Lee
OK, so I told myself I wouldn’t shit on Taichi during this review but this guy had to go and beat Dragon Lee. What business does he have beating Dragon Lee, I swear if this dude wins this tournament I don’t know what i’ll do but let’s just say Taichi won’t be able to see the fruits of his victory. He doesn’t deserve anything more than being the job guy in tag matches but you have him beating one of the best Jr.’s you have. Whatever i’m done talking about this jabronie. Solid match because Dragon Lee did a good carry job to make Taichi look good. This gives Taichi 4 points as well adding him into the tie for first place.
Match Rating: ***
Ricochet vs Hiromu Takahashi
This is a rematch from their match for the Jr. Heavyweight Title a while back and that was great so I expected nothing different here. It wasn’t as good as their previous match but still a good one. If any match from these two shows is worth checking out it’s this one. Really good stuff from two of the best in the world. Ricochet gets the win here which also gives him 4 points which makes it a 5 way tie for the first place of A Block.
Match Rating: ***3/4
This show was fine, had better matches than Night 3 but nothing too good besides Scurll/Liger and Takahashi/Ricochet. I think they didn’t go hard on these smaller shows but they will when it’s live.
