RAW REVIEW 09/23/2019
Tonight, who will be crowned the #1 Contender for the Universal Championship next week on the Season Premiere of Raw as AJ Styles, Rey Mysterio, Shinsuke Nakamura, Robert Roode, and Ricochet all face off in a Fatal Five Way Match? Plus, after being defeated by Baron Corbin in the King Of The Ring Finals last week can Chad Gable get some retribution when the two face one on one again? “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt has been granted his Universal Title Match at Hell In A Cell but what will Wyatt do in his newest edition of the Firefly Fun House? Finally, can Nikki Cross slow down Sasha Banks this week and pick up a win as the two go one on one?
Raw comes to us from the Chase Center in San Francisco, California.
Raw kicks off with a recap of Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt last week.
In-Ring Segment: Seth Rollins
Rollins says in the last 7 years he has done a lot and seen a lot but he has never felt the way he felt last week on Raw. he tells how he was laying there and was defenseless and before he knows what’s going on he has the living embodiment of a nightmare this close to his face. He tells how he closed his eyes and hoped it was all a bad dream he would wake up from but it’s not, it’s worse because in less than two weeks he has to step in Hell In A Cell and defend against Bray Wyatt. He says everyone knows how dangerous the match is but it’s even more with The Fiend. He says what he will do is survive and prevail. He goes over how he beat Lesnar at SummerSlam by surviving and prevailing and tells how he just did the same thing against Braun Strowman. He says no what mind games The Fiend comes at him with he is going to survive and prevail. He says he’s not saying it’s going to be easy… he is then cut off and here comes Braun Strowman!
Strowman tells him if he has something to say about him to say it to his face. He says, unlike his opponent he doesn’t run around here playing Mr. Rogers playing psycho games with puppets. He tells if he has a problem and he comes and tells them and Rollins should do the same. He then gets mad at Rollins for saying he hoped he wouldn’t get a rematch for the Universal title. Rollins says he has a lot on his plate and says he said that he’s glad he doesn’t have to face him anytime soon. Rollins says the way he is talking he is making him what to fight him. Strowman asks if that’s a challenge. Rollins tells him to take that anyway he wants to. Braun says good, then tonight you’re gonna get these hands.
My Opinion:
Rollins definitely does have a lot on his plate but this is what makes him such a great champion. For Rollins, if you look at the opponents he has had to face and the ones coming up it’s pretty remarkable what he is doing and how he is keeping up with all of it. There is no break for the champ and tonight is no different. With Braun Strowman I wonder if he ever will reach the top of the mountain. He has been given chances but they never go with him and it seems maybe he needs something more than just being a monster. When you look at Bray Wyatt he has stayed at the top because he is always evolving and he hit a home run. For Strowman, if he did something different, maybe he could finally be that guy. He is over but obviously just not there yet but I do hope he gets to be a champion someday because there is no doubt he’s been a fighting one.
*** Seth Rollins vs Braun Strowman will happen later tonight!
Match 1: The Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar) vs The O.C. (Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson w/AJ Styles)
Anderson hammers away on Erik trying to fight out of the corner. He finally does but Erik stays in control and uses his power to slam Anderson and ground him. Ivar tags in and lands a huge knee strike. Erik lands another shot of his one. Ivar lands a shot to the nose and then goes after Anderson’s arm. Ivar makes the tag and then lands a slam. Erik picks up Ivar and slams him on Anderson. Finally, Anderson fights away and tags Gallows. Gallows hits a big right and then hits a side slam. A cover and a kick out. Gallows lands a series of elbows and then works Erik on the mat. Erik fights away and tags Ivar. Ivar takes down Gallows and is in control. Ivar is able to hit Gallows and catch Anderson with an elbow. Styles provides a distraction and this allows Gallows to land a big boot. The ref then sends AJ Styles to the back. Cedric Alexander then attacks Styles from behind and chases Styles backstage as Raw goes to break.
As Raw returns, Anderson and Gallows are in control of Ivar. Gallows comes in and lands big body shots on Ivar. Gallows lands a series of headbutts and then tries a right but Ivar blocks. He then hits Anderson and connects with a seton on Gallows. Erik and Anderson then come in. Erik takes control and lays out Anderson and Gallows. Ivar comes in and Erik takes out Anderson with double knees. He then lifts Ivar and uses him to crush Anderson in the corner. A cover and a kick out by Anderson. Ivar is then pulled to the floor by Gallows. Anderson lands the spine buster and goes for the cover but Erik kicks out. With Ivar down the O.C. land the Boot of Doom. A cover and a kick out by Erik. Erik fights out of the Magic Killer and tags Ivar. he takes out Gallows with a clothesline. They then hit the Viking Experience. Erik takes out Gallows on the outside and Ivar pins Anderson for the 1 2 3.
Winners: The Viking Experience (Erik & Ivar)
My Opinion:
This is a huge win for The Viking Experience! They were tested for sure but that’s what happens when arguably the two best teams in WWE meet. Erik and Ivar made a statement and should they can weather a storm and ultimately picked there spot to come out on top. We know how good those guys are and I do think it is a matter of time until they are champions. I still wish they were the War Raiders but nonetheless they’re still that dominating team they always have been and they continue to be one of the most unified and well-constructed teams we have seen. For Gallows and Anderson, it’s time to regroup and get a rematch to try to get one back on these guys.
Backstage Segment: Robert Roode
Charly asks Roode about the Fatal Five Way Match tonight and why he thinks he will come out on top. He tells that he pinned Rollins to win the tag titles, he has beaten him already and with the Universal Title on the line the results will be Glorious!
Michael Cole Sit Down With Becky Lynch:
Cole asks Becky Lynch about her decision to have her match with Sasha inside Hell In A Cell and asks if it was a wise move with Sasha on her hot streak. Becky says she wants Sasha on her hot streak. She tells how she came her to Raw and called out everyone and Sasha on her hot streak is exactly what she wants. Cole then tells how Sasha has already been in a Hell In A Cell. Becky tells how Sasha lost. Cole then asks about Bayley being around ringside. Becky says this is about keeping Sasha in and she can’t wait to have her all to herself. Cole then asks about Becky’s fine for hitting Sasha with the chair. Becky says Sasha came looking to end her and at Hell In A Cell she better take her shot because she will.
My Opinion:
Becky seems very confident and obviously as champion that’s how you want to be. For her, this upcoming match is huge because Sasha has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Even though Lynch has beaten Banks if she loses she will never live it down. The time has come for Becky to really put her money where her mouth is and prove just how much of The Man she really is.
Match 2: Rusev vs EC3
EC3 goes after Rusev and is able to land big strikes to start the match. He gets him in the corner but Rusev turns it around. EC3 turns it around with an elbow but Rusev gets in control and slams him. Again Rusev is able to slam and continues to manhandle EC3. Rusev connects with the Machika Kick. Rusev then lands a kick to the spine and puts on the Accolade. EC3 taps out.
Winner: Rusev
My Opinion:
A very quick win for Rusev as he continues to try and build on his return from last week. I am glad they had him face EC3 because it helps him reestablish himself against formidable opponents. We all know how talented Rusev is and how much he has to offer but you have to wonder if he can ever get as hot as he once was. There has been a lot of wasted opportunities with him in the past and I hope this time around they make his presence count and work him into something meaningful.
Backstage Segment: Rey Mysterio
Rey tells how he a few weeks ago he almost retired but thanks to his son he didn’t and he is still here. He tells how he has an opportunity to try and face Seth Rollins next week for the Universal Title. He then dedicates the Fatal Five Way Match to his son.
Match 3: Nikki Cross w/ Alexa Bliss vs Sasha Banks w/ Bayley
Cross tries to go right at Banks but is backed off by the ref. Finally, they lock up and Banks backs her to the corner. Banks then hammers on her with right hands. Cross comes out of the corner hot and hits a big forearm. She stays on her and brings Banks down. She then lands a big flip and follows with a basement dropkick. A cover and a kick out by Banks. Banks goes to the outside for a breather. Banks gets back in the ring and lands a cheap shot to Cross. She then gets on top and lands a flurry of right hands once again. Cross lands a roll up but Banks kicks out. Cross then lands an arm drag and works the arm of Sasha. Banks gets out but again Cross lands a big arm drag and goes back to work. A crucifix cover but another kick out by Banks. Cross again goes to an arm drag and continues to stay in control. A crossbody but again Cross can’t put her away. Banks goes to the outside and this time Cross follows. Cross gets on her back but Banks breaks the hold by dropping her and Cross to the floor as Raw goes to break.
As Raw returns, banks works Cross on the mat stretching her shoulders. Cross gets to a vertical base and looks to fight out. She lands a roll-up but again Banks kicks out. Banks hits her with a forearm in the corner. She looks for double knees but Cross gets her with a boot. Banks shakes it off and this time hits double knees. She covers Cross but Cross kicks out. Banks grabs the arm of Cross and goes to a submission. Cross gets to her feet and lands a big right. She continues to fight off Banks and avoids her in the corner. Cross keeps control and then slams Banks in the corner. A bulldog and then a cover but Banks kicks out. Banks comes back hanging up the leg of Cross on the ropes. Cross tries to get away from her and finally does sending Sasha shoulder first into the ring post. Cross is able to hit Banks in the face and Banks goes to the outside. Banks then launches herself to the outside and drives Banks to the floor. Cross lands a kick on the apron and then hangs up Banks on the ropes. She takes down Banks and goes for the cover but Banks kicks out. Banks lands a kick and then hits a knee to the side of the face. A cover and a kick out from Cross. Banks lands a dropkick and sends Cross to the outside. Banks then looks for a baseball slide but she gets caught in the apron and Cross takes control. Banks fights off Cross in the ring. Banks gets caught and hit with the neck breaker. Bayley then provides a distraction and Bliss has to come take her out. Cross goes up top and hits the crossbody. Banks rolls through though and locks in the Banks Statement. Cross taps.
*** After the match Banks hits the backstabber on Bliss and then puts her in the Banks Statement.
Winner: Sasha Banks
My Opinion:
What an effort from Nikki Cross, I mean wow did she fight and fight and fight. Banks ultimately came out on top and made an exclamation point at the end but she was tested. There is no doubt Nikki Cross has been on another level lately but for Banks you’d think with her big match coming up, she would be more focused and able to put this one away quicker. Either way, Banks looked good tonight but does need to fix things up because Lynch will put her out, unlike Cross. For Nikki Cross, she needs to keep fighting because she is impressing a lot of people with what she is doing in there!
Backstage Segment: The O.C.
Styles asks Gallows and Anderson when are they going to learn they aren’t in his league. Gallows tells how everyone in the Fatal Five Way isn’t in his league. He says it doesn’t matter if they are a superhero or a rockstar because he is phenomenal. He says nothing will get in the way of him getting the universal Championship. They then give a Too Sweet.
Backstage Segment: The Street Profits
The Street Profits tell how Brock Lesnar is returning to Raw next week. They then talk about tonight and how Rollins will face Braun Strowman. They then hype up the #1 Contender’s Universal Championship Match. Dawkins then jokes and says he can’t still can’t get over Ricochet’s face from last week when he thought he was Maria’s baby daddy. Miz then comes in and says announces how he had his newborn baby this past Friday and unlike Mike and Maria, they know who the father is. He then announces next week he will host Miz TV with Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair. They then roll footage from SmackDown last week.
Match 4: Lacey Evans vs Ember Moon

Moon looks to fight out and is able to land a Samoan Drop. Moon lands a clothesline and then lands a big kick. Moon is thrown into the corner but fights out. She lands another big shot but is then taken down by a leg sweep. Evans gets Moon caught up in the ropes but Moon adjusts and hits a Stunner. Moon goes for the cover but Evans kicks out. Another cover and another kick. Moon goes up top but slips and Evans takes advantage. Evans connects with the Women’s Right. Evans then locks in the SharpShooter. Moon taps out.
Winner: Lacey Evans
My Opinion:
Evans wins again and continues to try to get in the mind of Natalya. I’m not a huge fan of Evans but hopefully given this opportunity she runs with it and has a decent match with Natalya whenever that happens. For Ember Moon, I really hope things get better because she has a ton of talent and potential and deserves more than this.
Backstage Segment: Natalya
Sarah asks Natalya about Evans using her move. Natalya says she gets why she would want to take a page from her playbook but she hasn’t mastered the SharpShooter. She says if she wants a rematch she better be ready to tap out.

*** Corbin says he isn’t out here to make fun of Gable tonight. He says he won’t be out here long because this match will be…short. He says after this match he declares he won’t have to face sawed-off runts under 5 feet 5 inches.

Corbin is able to stop Gable but Gable is able to take him down and locks in the Ankle Lock. Corbin grabs his scepter and tees off on gable causing the DQ. he then continues to beat down Gable.
Winner: Chad Gable: Via DQ
My Opinion:
Well, this wasn’t a clean win for Gable but this proves a lot that he took Corbin to the limit so much so he had to work a DQ. This definitely won’t settle with Corbin and I’m sure he is going to do something to right this one-off. For Gable, he has proven so much in the past month and continues to do so. I hope he finds success soon and gets on top for once.

Winner: Rey Mysterio: Will face Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship Next Week
My Opinion:
Yes! Mysterio did it! What a match, Mysterio was looking for that one break, that one big win and he finally did it. This is one of the biggest opportunities he has had since being back and I know he will kill it against Rollins. For me, I have to believe in Rollins and I don’t feel like next week will be Mysterio’s time but I do think it will be a chance for him to prove himself again and show he is still that guy from 2006. He can show he can still hang and prove he should still be considered for these opportunities. Either way, this is a dream match and I can’t wait to see these two do their thing.
Backstage Segment: Seth Rollins
Charly asks Rollins about facing Mysterio next week. Rollins congratulates him and says this is a dream match for him. He says he isn’t looking past it but he has to look to Hell In A Cell and facing bray Wyatt. The lights then begin to go out and The Fiend is here!
The Fiend has Braun Strowman in the mandible claw and he takes him down to the mat laying him out. Rollins screams as The fiend stares at him. The Fiend then goes back on Strowman and relocks the mandible claw. This time Strowman is really laid out. The Fiends laugh is heard as Raw goes off the air.
Winner: No Contest
My Opinion:
Wow, what a way to end the night. First off Rollins put up a great fight tonight and there is no doubter he is ready for anyone at any time. Strowman did start to come back but in the end, it didn’t matter. Strowman and Rollins really do impress e because they really know how to work together and make everything flow very well. Anyway, the ending with The Fiend was awesome! Just like last week, it leaves you with that eerie feeling and that is the best. The Fiend unlike anyone and I can’t wait to see what he does next week with how big the Season PRemier is going to be. I also wonder what will happen if he wins the title because it’d be awesome for him to do the promos as Bray Wyatt and then wrestle as The Fiend and continue the multiple personalities.
Final Thoughts:
A very solid Raw this week, starting off with a huge congrats to Rey Mysterio for pulling out the huge win tonight and gaining the opportunity to face for the Universal Championship. Mysterio and Rollins will kill it and it’s gonna be a great match to watch! Tonight I was very impressed with Nikki Cross, although she didn’t win she took Sasha to the limit and she is really proving herself as of late. For Banks, it’s time to regroup and go get the win again next week against Alexa Bliss. I thought the Viking Raiders picked up a huge win tonight against The O.C. The Viking Raiders have put themselves in title contention and I feel like there is so much they can do if they get the titles. Plus if they end up facing AOP it’s going to be amazing! I thought Chad Gable looked good in his match against Baron Corbin and Rusev looked good in his match as well. Gable and Rusev kind of have the same story where they aren’t used how they should be or to their max ability so with both getting wins tonight it’ll be interesting to see where they go. I did love Carmell winning the 24/7 title, this has kind of died down but that was a good way to keep the title interesting and funny as it has been. The main event was a solid match again as Rollins and Strowman continue to work so well together. The bigger story is The Fiend laid out Braun Strowman and that’s saying something. Seth Rollins has a big threat coming his way and I can’t wait to see this thing continue to develop, it’s been awesome!!! Overall it was a good night and I can’t wait for next week’s Raw, it’s going to be huge! Not just Raw but for Pro Wrestling in general, next week is going to be amazing!!!!
Overall Rating: 6.5/10
