SMACKDOWN REVIEW 06/09/2016
Welcome to our third Smackdown review here on thewrestlingclassic.com. Smackdown is getting closer and closer to having it’s own roster and being a live show again on the USA Network, so can they keep the momentum up? Let’s find out!
Smackdown comes to you this week from the Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas, taped on tuesday.
The show opens up with Mauro Ranallo hyping Money in the Bank in Las Vegas later this month. AJ Styles music hits and he heads to the ring accompanied by the rest of The Club. A video is played showing the events of the AJ Styles heel turn and the announcement of the fatal-four way tag team championship match. AJ Styles says that he made sure to get Gallows & Anderson big contracts when he signed with WWE and that he also wanted this match with John Cena. He cuts a heel promo where he says this year’s Money in the Bank will be the best ever not just because he will defeat John Cena but because The Club will also become tag team champions.
Enzo Amore & Big Cass interrupt with their usual promo and this leads to a back and forth argument between both teams where The Club emphasize on the fact that they have traveled all over the world and that the last time Enzo was in a big match, he went to sleep. Enzo & Cass vs. The Club is next!
1) The Club v. Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady.
In an entertaining and well executed match, this match ended in a no contest when the Vaudevillians and the New Day got involved in the match creating a four-team all out brawl. Personally, I believe Luke Gallows is great but he still looks a bit too slow for the fast paced matches he is being booked in.
New Day and Enzo & Cass clean house.
A video package that recapped the Dean Ambrose v. Chris Jericho feud is played.
The announce team pay tribute to Muhammad Ali and a tribute video package is played.
Renee Young is backstage with Lana and Rusev, Rusev answers a Renee question about a posible U.S Title Match against Titus O’ Neil by taking a heel shot at Muhammad Ali by calling himslef the best champion of all time. Titus walks in and says he feels insulted that Rusev would call himself the best champion ever. He borrows an Ali catchphrase and says the U.S Title will come with him at Money in the Bank.
Cesaro makes his entrance followed by Sami Zayn.
2) Cesaro & Sami Zayn v. Alberto del Rio & Kevin Owens.
In a really entertaining match, Kevin Owens & Alberto del Rio defeated Sami Zayn & Cesaro. This match was really entertaining because we got to see an awesome dynamic between Owens & Del Rio where they were playing the fact they didn´t want to be partners by stealing tags from each other and at one point, Kevin Owens walked out on Del Rio only to be dragged back out by Sami Zayn. At the end, Del Rio hit that stupid corner stomp, Owens got the tag and sent Del Rio flying to the barricade to get the pinfall win over Cesaro. Owens and Del Rio looked awesome as well as Cesaro & Zayn, and Del Rio gave us probably the best phrase he has ever said with “Asi se hace en Mexico, perros!” or “That’s how we do it in Mexico”.
Dana Brooke makes her way down to the ring accompanied by Charlotte. Natalya is next along Becky Lynch.
3) Becky Lynch vs Dana Brooke.
In a match where it was clear Dana is trying to show more carisma, Becky Lynch defeated Dana Brooke by submission with the Dis-Arm-Her. This represents Dana’s first loss on the main roster.
Baron Corbin is shown walking to the ring.
Another “Make Darren Young Great Again” vignette is shown along with Bob Backlund.
Kalisto makes his way to the ring followed by Baron Corbin. Dolph Ziggler is on commentary.
4) Baron Corbin v. Kalisto.
In a standard match, Baron Corbin defeated Kalisto with the End of Days. After the match, Ziggler and Corbin exchanged some words by yelling at each other.
Dean Ambrose makes his entrance followed by Chris Jericho for the Main Event of the evening.
5) Dean Ambrose v. Chris Jericho.
In a really god match, Chris Jericho defeated Dean Ambrose by pinfall with a Codebreaker. I mean, you already know what you are going to get from these two. Jericho plays his role marvelously and Ambrose is a ring talented super over babyface that can do no wrong.
After the match, Jericho retrieved a ladder, set it up in the corner and tried to irish-whip Ambrose into it but got reversed and got laid out instead. Ambrose retrieves another ladder, hits Jericho with it and then he just sets it up and sits at the top pointing at the Money in the Bank briefcase. Will this be the final image we’ll see at the MITB pay-per-view?
Smackdown ends with Ambrose celebrating.
This was a really really good episode of Smackdown actually. The tag división was played good, the Money in the Bank, the Women’s and the Corbin-Ziggler storylines moved forward, and the match quality was a definite step up from previous weeks. WWE definetly did their job of keeping Smackdown’s momentum for the Brand Split.
This show gets a really solid 8.5 out of 10 from us.
That was Smackdown this week for us! Do you disagree in something we said? Comment about it.
