SMACKDOWN REVIEW 06/16/2016
Here we are! We are closer and closer to the Brand Split and for Smackdown to become a separate brand! This time, we bring you WWE’s Go-Home show to Money in the Bank. Can Smackdown live up to the hype of this weekend’s PPV? Let’s find out.
WWE Smackdown comes to you on the USA Network, taped at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.
We start things up with the Money In The Bank briefcase hanging on top of the ring and Mauro Ranallo right below it. Chris Jericho is in the ring presenting “Talk Is Jericho” showing off his new JeriTron 6500 and a brand-new blue carpet fabricated by some fancy thingy. He proceeds to introduce his guest at this time, the man he hates the most, Dean Ambrose.
The Lunatic Fringe compliments Jericho´s new set and mocks him about his blue carpet and threatens to spill his coffee in his new blue carpet. Jericho inmediatly freaks out about it and says neither the crowd or Dean are worthy of being at his show while he demands the production team to raise the JeriTron and shut everything off. Jericho then reprimented Ambrose for what he did to his light jacket and the 69 thumbtacks he had in his back from their Asylum match at Extreme Rules, and also burned him by saying all the holes in his back didn’t compare to Ambrose’s hole in his soul for not being a World Champion while bragging about himself winnng the gold 6 times.
Kevin Owens then interrupted both men stating that the briefcase belongs to him. Out comes Alberto Del Rio saying he is the only one in the match that has won the big prize. Interrupted by Cesaro, and before he says a word, Sami Zayn comes out too to hype the six-man tag match for later on the show. Ambrose ended up pouring his coffee in the carpet and the brawl started, having to be separated by referees.
1) Big Cass vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Aiden English vs. Luke Gallows.
In a match where Aiden English and Luke Gallows double teamed a good portion of the match, Kofi Kingston won the match after pinning Aiden English with a Trouble in Paradise.
This match told a good story, with some good combination of talent and Luke Gallows finally (In my opinión) playing off to his strenghts.
Post-Match trash talking by Enzo, roasting Xavier a little bit comparing a fart to what he does with Francesca II.
In a backstage segment, Becky Lynch and Natalya are interviewed and as they were talking about friendship, they are interrumpted by Charlotte and Dana Brooke just to let Natalya know that Charlotte would knock her lights out later tonight.
Baron Corbin makes his way to the ring.
2) Baron Corbin vs Zack Ryder.
With Dolph Ziggler in the announcing team (Yes, again), Baron Corbin defeated Zack Ryder by pinfall with and End of Days. Baron Corbin is slowly improving in the ring, but these matches with no relevance whatsoever against dead talent like Zack Ryder are not doing him any favours whatsoever.
Lana is in the ring presenting Rusev by doing her usual “Put your hand over your heart” stuff as a video of Rusev’s actions lately is played. As it ends, Kalisto makes his way down to the ring. Rusev catches him as he jumped to the ring, applying a bear hug. He then proceded to absolutely destroy Kalisto & Sin Cara until Titus O’Neil (Again) ran down to make the sabe. Both men have a staredown.
In a backstage segment, the New Day makes fun of AJ Styles’ sense of style and fashion leading to Styles challenging Xavier Woods to a match later on.
3) Xavier Woods vs AJ Styles.
In an okay match for both men, AJ Styles defeated Xavier Woods after he submitted to the Calf Killer. AJ played his heel persona in this match almost brilliantly and personally I’m really glad Xavier Woods is getting some TV time.
Yet another Darren Young & Bob Backlund segment is played.
4) Charlotte vs. Natalya.
In yet another Natalya v Charlotte match, Charlotte defeated Natalya by submission with a figure eight after a Little brawl between Becky Lynch and Dana Brooke inside the ring a cheap shot to the led from Charlotte to Natalya.
Ok, I’m starting to get annoyed by this women’s program. This was pretty much the exact same match we’ve seen like 10 times in the past two months with nothing new or interesting, with Charlotte still looking like a weak champion and with Natalya still being the talented un-charismatic, one-dimensional wrestler.
A video highlighting the stoy of Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins is played to hype this sunday’s main event.
Dean Ambrose makes his way to the ring for tonight’s main event.
Everyone else is already in the ring and only Jericho gets a televised entrance.
5) Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens & Alberto del Rio vs. Dean Ambrose, Sami Zayn & Cesaro.
In a good match that focused primarly on the “Every man for himself” factor, Ambrose, Cesaro & Zayn defeated Owens, Del Rio & Jericho when Ambrose pinned Owens with a Dirty Deeds after Owens attacked his two partners.
This match, as all the matches involving these six competitors have been, was really interesting as it clearly wanted to make everyone look like a threat and a posible winner for this sunday’s Money in the Bank ladder match.
Dean Ambrose celebrates by himself in the ring to close out the show.
This show was nothing exactly awesome, but with good matches and a good build fot this sunday’s PPV, this edition of Smackdown did it’s job of focusing in almost an excesive way on hyping every single match on the card.
I would personally rate this week’s Smackdown as a 7 out of 10, just because even though the matches and segments were good, they were nothing we haven’t seen before which took away some excitement I guess.
Even though this Smackdown was not as good, you really should be hyped fot Money in the Bank this Sunday!
