Smackdown Review 07/10/2020
Hello! Welcome back to this weeks Smackdown review. Tonight’s show coming to us from the WWE performance center is shaping up to be a solid show. Tonight we know that two tag matches will take place as Sasha Banks and Bayley will battle Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross in non-title action. Then, New Day will defend their Smackdown Tag Team Championships against the team of Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. Plus, Jeff Hardy will be a special guest on MizTV and so much more. So, let’s get into it!
Live from the WWE Performance Center
⁃ We kick off with Miz TV. Miz and Morrison are in the ring, they introduce Jeff Hardy, with slight shots at him in the intro. Jeff makes his way to the ring. Once he entered, Miz shows a clip of the feud that’s been going on between Jeff and Sheamus. Miz questions the darkness inside of Jeff Hardy. He says his daughter is a fan of Jeff, but he doesn’t want his daughter to look up to someone who will self destruct. Miz then asks if Jeff Hardy is okay, to which he says he is fine and it’ll take a lot more than Sheamus throwing insults to drive him back to his past. He says that he is here to help everyone else going through addiction to prove that change is possible and hope is real. Miz says his words were very nice and he wants to help Jeff, so, he proposes that Jeff Hardy gets one more match against Sheamus but this time, in a bar fight. Jeff says he knows what they’re trying to do, but he will prove them all wrong and he accepts. Jeff throws out a challenge to them, and challenges one of them to choose which one of them wants punched in the face. Before they can answer, Hardy punches Miz in his face and sends Morrison scrambling out of the ring to end the segment.
Jeff Hardy vs. Miz
We come back to a commercial to see that a match was made. Jeff Hardy was all in control from the start, but gradually Miz started to turn the tide. He worked over Hardy’s ribs, wearing him down to the point Jeff struggled to stand. Jeff Hardy tried to fight back, but Miz was making it difficult for him to gain back control. But, once he did, Jeff had Miz in the perfect position for the Swanton. Suddenly, Morrison pulled Miz out of the ring, seemingly saving him from harms way. But, Jeff changed his direction and dove to the outside taking out both Miz and Morrison to send us to a commercial break. Upon return, the match was once again all Miz. He hits a nasty DDT on Jeff and almost put him away, but Hardy stays in it for now. Miz hits him with the It Kicks, but once again couldn’t put Hardy away. A now visible frustrated Miz tried for something else, but was caught with a jaw breaker. Jeff hitting all his vintage moves, once he set up for another Swanton, Sheamus came up on the screen. Sheamus told Jeff he’s loving the match. A distracted Jeff Hardy got down from the top and had his full attention on the screen. Suddenly, Miz rolled up Hardy from behind, but Jeff reverses it into a roll up of his own and gets the victory.
My Thoughts
Solid match here between Jeff and Miz. The Sheamus distraction was inevitable, but Hardy still pulled off the win. Not bad. Enjoyable opening.
⁃ Backstage, Cesaro and Shinsuke say they’re tired of the New Day and their antics. They said tonight they will become new tag team champions.
⁃ Sasha and Bayley were making their entrance but get attacked on the ramp from behind by Nikki and Alexa. A brawl breaks out that sends us to commercial.
Bayley & Sasha Banks vs. Nikki Cross & Alexa Bliss
The brawl got under control during the break and we’re back with tag action. Personally, I would love to know how many matches these two teams have had together because I feel like we see a variation of this every week. It’s pretty tiring at this point, but here we are again. From the start, Alexa & Nikki jad the advantage, possible from the pre-match attack, but they’ve certainly maintained the champs for a good bit of time. Even Nikki had them distracted from stealing the title mid match and dancing around with it. Things started to change when Bayley made a tag and Alexa didn’t notice it, causing Bayley to gain control. Frequent tags between Sasha and Bayley kept Alexa in their corner. They did a fantastic job at cutting off the ring and making sure Alexa couldn’t get close to Cross. But, frustration started to creep in when they couldn’t put Alexa away. Alexa began to fight back and FINALLY got to her corner. Nikki was tagged in and went on a rampage, taking on both Sasha and Bayley by herself. Nikki almost had it in the bag when she hit Bayley with a twisting neck breaker, but this caused Sasha to break up the pin. In turn, Alexa and Sasha got into it, causing Nikki to take her eye off the ball. Bayley rolled across up from behind for the win.
My Thoughts
Decent match here, but just as I said, i don’t know how much longer i can take these two teams going at it. I want to see other women so bad because to me, this is getting very stale. Also, I’d like to point out that this was yet again another roll-up victory which I’ve noticed happens way too often on smackdown. Even tonight, In both of the matches thus far. Hopefully after extreme rules we can move on.
⁃ We see a look back at Braun vs Bray from money in the bank.
⁃ New Day are backstage now. They say that every time someone gets one win over them, they think they’re better. But for the past six years they’ve proved they’re better than everyone and tonight will be no different. They will remain champions.
⁃ We see Naomi and Lacey getting ready backstage because up next it’s Naomi, Lacey, Dana & Tamina in a karaoke showdown. Goodness.
⁃ Jey Uso is out in the ring, he is the host for the karaoke showdown. The rules are that each women gets 45 seconds to sing their favorite WWE theme song and the crowd votes a winner. Lacey is first, singing with my baby tonight by Jeff Jarrett. Her singing was okay. Dana Brooke is next, she sings Honkey Tonk Man’s theme. This was worse than Lacey, Jey even stopped her because it was so bad. Tamina is next, she is singing Triple H’s theme song, she was dancing so bad, Uso made her stop nearly right away. Naomi is last, she is singing Dusty Rhodes theme. This was definitely the best one, considering she also danced which she is best at. This was probably the most cringe segment that has happened in a bit. But, the crowd went wild for Naomi and she wins. After she won, Lacey attacked Naomi. A brawl between the two broke out, sending us to commercial break.
Naomi vs. Lacey Evans
Impromptu match here as a fallout from the brawl. They’re not in gear either. Also, both are barefoot. Lacey used her dress as a way to choke Naomi, but Naomi battled back and took Lacey down with a nasty kick. Lacey rolled out of the ring and suddenly, Dana and Tamina started brawling and it spilled into the ring, the match gets called off and Lacey runs away.
My Thoughts
Terrible.
⁃ AJ Styles is backstage being interviewed. He says he embarrassed Drew Gulak and he is the best champion. Sarah informs him that next week he will defend once again, this time against Matt Riddle. AJ freaks out and starts yelling at her. He says he will teach Matt a lesson next week.
New Day vs. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Tag Team Championship Match)
Cesaro and Nakamura were in control from the start. This is honestly what I’d call domination, because New Day just couldn’t get their team going here. Every time they tried, Nakamura and Cesaro cut them off. Nakamura had Kofi reeling, but he some how pulled off the SOS, and made a tag to Big E. But, at the same time Nakamura made a tag to Cesaro. Both men came in on fire! Fun back and forth action between these two, the power of both men was in full effect here. Big E ended up getting Cesaro up in a powerbomb position, while Kofi made a tag and double stomped Cesaro off of E’s shoulders. Sweet tag move. Nakamura came in to break up the pin, and things started to break down, but Cesaro and Shinsuke got the better of New Day. But, just when you thought the brawl was over, Big E ran back in and caused another brawl. They fought to the outside and the ref called the match off. Double DQ. Cesaro and Nakamura once again got the better of New Day, then Cesaro set up a table in the ring. He then laid Big E out on the table before powerbombing Kofi onto him, sending them both crashing through the table.
Cesaro and Nakamura stand tall to end the show.
My Thoughts
Solid match here, I enjoyed the action and i don’t mind the double DQ finish because I called this last week. I knew they’d introduce the table again and would probably set something up for extreme rules, maybe a tables match? We will see soon.
My Overall Thoughts
The show started off alright, then it just went down from there. The main event brought it up a bit but there’s more bad than good here. Every single match ended in a DQ or a RollUp. Which seems like a common theme week after week. Then, last week I asked for more women, so they give us BossHug vs BlissCross again, and they give the other women a Karaoke battle? Bullshit. I had a bit of hope though when they gave us Naomi vs Lacey out of that, but my light was dimmed again when the match ended up being about two minutes with a DQ finish. This brand is becoming super repetitive and very boring. Also, once again no Mandy or Sonya, we haven’t seen Mr MITB Otis in weeks, no Bray or Braun again, only promo videos, this show is quickly becoming my least favorite wrestling show throughout the week. It is consistently bad and I am highly annoyed at the state of this garbage show. Hopefully it gets better. Thanks for reading, I’ll see you next week.
