Episode 3 & 4 [/header]
Hello everyone, my name is Claritza. I recently started watching the CWC tournament from the beginning again, so I asked Justin if I could review the event for the website before the live “Final Four” event where the winner will be crowned. I thought it would be cool to watch and review the tournament since I’ll be attending the live show for final matches of the tournament. I hope this allows anyone who hasn’t watched any of the tournament a reason to watch it before the final show.
A little background on myself: Yes, I am a girl and no I didn’t just pick up on wrestling because of Total Divas or because of shirtless hot guys, the hot shirtless guys are just a major plus. My parents are avid WWE fans, so I’ve been watching wrestling my whole life Any-who, for me this is the very first time I am watching a lot of these wrestlers in action so this is my very first impression on every single one of these competitors, which I feel a lot of other people can relate to.
Episode 3
Zack Sabre Jr. – Technical Style
vs
Tyson Dux – Technical Style
I’m just going to start off saying that Tyson has one of the better CWC theme songs. Zack is a very good technical wrestler, he transitions from the body part he’s working on nicely and smoothly while still inflicting pain on the opponent. This match was technically based with beautiful submissions left and right. Zack pulled off the win when Tyson Dux had to verbally submit to the umaplata.
Match rating: 3.5/5
Drew Gulak – Submission Style
vs
Harv Sihra – Technical Style
Gulak seems very old schooled. He just wants to beat people up. To be honest, this match didn’t stand out to me. It was just a basic wrestling match. Gulak picking up the win with the dragon sleeper was nice though.
Match rating: 2/5
Anthony Bennett – Technical Style
vs
Tony Nese – Technical Style
This match was better than I expected. Tony is a very well rounded wrestler. He can hit you with a power move, then a moonsault out of nowhere. It’s fantastic. Anthony did the best he could, but even his best wasn’t good enough. A bit of an awkward ending, but nonetheless Tony picked up the win via a 450 splash.
Match rating: 3/5
Raul Mendoza – Lucha Libre Style
vs
Brian Kendrick – High Flying Style
Going into this match my eyes were all on Brian since I knew who he was and boy did Raul made me pay attention to him. You don’t expect the things Mendoza does to come from him. Mendoza pulled out all the stops with beautiful high flying moves, including performing a gorgeous coast to coast. But, Brian being the veteran got the upper hand and picked up the win with the bully choke.
Match rating: 4/5
Episode 4
Jason Lee – High Flying Style
vs
Rich Swann – High Flying
Okay, I take it back, Rich Swann has the best theme song in this tournament. Lee is very quick with his moves and not only is Swann very athletic, but he’s fun to watch in the ring. This match was back and forth. Jason really didn’t much of a showing in my opinion. Swann had the upper hand most of the match, he delivered a standing 450 splash for the win.
Match rating: 3/5
Noam Dar – Technical Style
vs
Gurv Sihra – Technical Style
I would like to state now that I’m in love with with Noam Dar, but I’m not going to be biased. One would think Dar being as young as he is, that he wouldn’t have much experience, but nope. He’s very aware of what needs to get done in the ring. Again, Sihra didn’t get much of a showing. Throughout the match Dar focused on Gurv’s leg leading to the victory via knee bar.
Match rating: 3/5
Jack Gallagher – Technical Style
vs
Fabian Aichner – Technical Style
Jack is an absolute joy to watch wrestle. He’s very scientific and smooth. Both men shined in this match. Seeing Fabian, you’d think he’s all power, but don’t let looks fool you, he performed a phenomenal double springboard moonsault. The match was back and forth with different types or styles from submission moves to power moves, such as the sit out powerbomb delivered by Fabian. But at the end of the match, Jack won with a corner dropkick.
Match rating: 4/5
Tommaso Ciampa – Hard-hitting Style
vs
Johnny Gargano – Technical Style
The final match of the first round was against two men who know each there very well. Johnny and Tommaso are tag partners, so of course it was fitting for them to wrestle one another. Both men are excellent performers. Ciampa was in control for a good part in the beginning. He delivered viscous back elbows to the jaw of Johnny. Once Johnny got the upper hand, he performed a superkick to the head of Ciampa while Ciampa was on the ropes, then a sit out powerbomb, Ciampa rolled out the ring to try to recover from the moves Gargano followed up with a suicide dive. Gargano and Ciampa went back and forth for a bit, giving it their all. They eventually made it to the ring apron exchanging chops. Tommaso gave Johnny a big kick and then he performed a devastating air-raid crash onto the ring apron. Once back in the ring Tomasso wanted to end it, but grew hesitant due to being good friends, that hesitation almost cost him the match. After a little back and forth, Tomasso became infuriated after Johnny slapped him, then he began to slap Johnny multiple times, after a counter from Gargano he pulled off the win using a crucifix pin. After the match Gargano held his hand out for a handshake which Ciampa denied. Ciampa began to leave the ring, but came back, sat down in the ring with Johnny and gave him a hug. This match was just a thing of beauty.
Match rating: 5/5 or 6/5 😉
