Top Ten: Greatest Female Wrestling Managers
Sometimes, all a man needs for motivation is a woman by their side. This has notably seen throughout professional wrestling for decades, as many of wrestling’s biggest legends gained help from a strong female being in their corner. The inspiration of inspiration for many superstars to reach amazing levels of success. A female manager can be there to inspire their counterpart through tough matches, or play an important role by causing mischief outside the ring to make sure you pick up the victory. Either way, women manager’s can never be underestimated.
Although Stephanie never occupied the role full time, you knew it was always very important whenever she was ringside. No matter who she was with, varying from her own father Vince, Chris Jericho or her husband, Triple H, she was there to help whoever she was in work with. The most recent example of this is Wrestlemania of this year, when she took a vicious spear from Roman Reigns in spare of her husband. Now that is commitment to the role at its finest. Whenever you had the billion dollar princess by your side, you knew you were going in with the advantage.
One of the most outstanding features about Terri Runnels was that she was able to adjust to any manager role depending on who the client may be. This was first noticed in her partnership with the uncanny personality of Goldust. During Goldust’s first few years with the WWE, he would be supported by Terri, who herself would sit at ringside, usually with a smoking cigar in hand, watching her compadre violate his opponents in the ring. Unusual, I know. But during a time where Goldust may have been very difficult to watch due to the numerous sexual undertones he portrayed, the sexual allurance of Terri Runnels by ringside never failed to keep the viewers attention. She would go on to be a manager for the Hardy Boyz for a short period of time, but her tenure with Goldust will always be her greatest work.
Maria Kanellis is the proof that you can make some fine lemonade when life gives you some sour lemons. After her sudden release from the WWE, Maria would travel the wrestling world where she eventually find herself in the Impact Zone, where she would hold championship gold and become the ringside manager of her husband and former X-Divison champion, Mike Bennett. She is considered one of the greatest talkers in wrestling today, which correlates with Mike Bennet’s heel character. With Maria in Bennent’s corner, you feel a sense of power within the two that you would fail to find in most heels. I could see them sticking together as a two in wrestling for a long time to come.
“Excuse me!”, were the words you would hear when the cynical diva Vickie Guerrero was making her way to the ring. Vickie was despised by fans for the repetitive use for the phrase, but she was good news for whoever had the pleasure of working with her. We first saw glimpses of her work in her on screen relationship with Edge. However, Dolph Ziggler would especially warm up to Vickie, as she would help the show off win multiple championship during his heel run in the late 2000’s. No matter what she was doing or who she was with, she was able to generate some genuine heel heat which would make for very entertaining television. No one will ever be able to fill the shoes of the sinister Guerrero.
The Ravashing Russian is currently one of the best Manager’s in WWE, for the reason being that she has been able to adjust to a role that most women would turn down. Yes, she is working with her husband, Rusev. However, she is able to put on a very fluent Russian accent and has been for the past 3 years. Personally, I think that’s really impressive, and it works so well with Rusev’s brute character. Lana has become one of the most popular figures in WWE within the fans, and with in-ring competition being teased, there could be a lot more to come for Lana.
There’s no sugarcoating it; Chyna was scary. At that time, Wrestling fans had never seen such a pshycially dominating woman in profession wrestling, so her presence was felt from the start. Although her most notable work was in her own singles competition, she was also able to help some of wrestling’s biggest legends at ringside, some examples being Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, D-Generation X and most notably, Triple H. One thing you could guarantee from Chyna was intimidation, and that single factor would help whoever she was with immensely. Her influence in wrestling will never be forgotten.
During the Mid-90s, there was wasn’t a woman in wrestling that drew more attention than Sunny did. Known as the first diva in wrestling, the bitter sweet Sunny had enough sex appeal to make anything worth a million dollars. She would usually manage tag teams, such as The Road Warriors and the Bodydonnas. However, she was only interested in tag teams if they had the gold, which would lead to numerous amount of betreyal’s and break ups. The unusual mix of beauty and menace would help give the WWE the sexual edge they were looking for. A true pioneer for women in wrestling during the attitude era and beyond.
Lita has proven that she is one of the most influential women in proffesional wrestling, setting a pathway to some of the great female competitors we see today. She showed that she had the ability to do anything, and one of those things was being a great ringside manager. She was begin managing in ECW, but would later join the Hardy Boyz, where she would rile the two on it matches and could join them in physical competition whenever she was needed. Yet, her most significant work was with the Rated-R superstar, Edge. After a real life affair with Edge was revealed by then boyfriend Matt Hardy, WWE would quickly turn it in to a storyline, creating some magnificent matches between Matt and Edge, with Lita playing a large role within the fued. She would put her body on the line for Edge when needed and was able to put on great heel work due to the real life heat she was getting. A great all- round manager as a face and a heel.
The best thing about Miss Elizabeth is that she always believed in Randy, even when Randy lost belief in her. In her time, she was a true sweetheart and very important in the hall-of-fame career of Randy Savage. She commonly would play a significant role in Randy’s rivalries, as most of his fueds were inspired by Miss Elizabeth and were in her honour, such as his bouts with George Steele, Jake Roberts and Hulk Hogan. Liz would never have to do a lot, but would always find herself in the centre of attention. Her tremendous beauty and soft spoken personality will live forever in professional wrestling.
There’s just no arguing it; she is one of the best heel manager’s of all time. In her time with WWE, she was the manager of some of the greatest wrestlers of all time, such as Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage. There are many words to describe Sherri, but I think the most ouststanding aspect of her character was that she was unique. Whether she was a Queen, Sensational or a Sister, you would never find someone as loud and proud as Sherri was. Her screeching voice is the stuff of nightmares. Her strong uphold as a female manger would mean that you would have a death wish if you were to let her down, which both Randy and Shawn would learn first hand. She was mean, fierce, clamorous but glamorous.
