WWE Hell in a Cell Predictions
In recent history it feels like the Hell in a Cell match has become regular match just surrounded by the cage. There is no more blood and very little brutality involving weapons and the cell itself during the matches. The cell wall is used as weapon mainly and if we’re lucky there are some weapons. However, this Sunday is a historic night for not only the WWE but professional wrestling. There are three main events, which are taking place in the devils structure, Hell in a Cell. In which three of Raw’s major titles are being defended. Regardless my feelings towards gimmick PPV’s and how they take away the lust away from matches such as the Hell in a Cell, this event will still be historic. The 2016 edition of Hell in the Cell will forever go down in history as the PPV that featured for the first ever time, two female competitors stepping foot into the squared circle in a Hell in a Cell match for the Women’s Title, when Sasha Banks defends her championship against Charlotte. Personally to me thats the main event, however the other two major matches taking place in the Cell is Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship and Rusev facing off against Roman Reigns for the United States Championship. The card is also stacked with tag matches, cruiserweights and much more. This is Raw’s second exclusive PPV since the brand extension and personally their first one didn’t really live up to my expectations but hopefully this event will. I mean how can it not? Three Hell in the Cell matches and the first one featuring two of the most over women in the company today? I know Survivor Series is the next PPV shared by both brands but Smackdown is going to have a hard time competing against Hell in a Cell when they put on TLC. Anyway, lets move forward with my predictions.
PS. I wrote a blog not a while back where I did some fantasy booking for the Raw’s following Clash of Champions leading to this event for my ideal main event match. If you haven’t checked it out, you can check it out by clicking here.
Six Man Cruiserweight Action
Cedric Alexander, Lince Dorado & Sin Cara vs. Tony Nese, Drew Gulak & Ariya Daivari
Image via WWE.com
The kick off show will feature a six man cruiserweight match you know to further expose the newest division on Raw. Personally, I love the idea behind the division and I really enjoy a lot of the talent involved in the division but it really hasn’t clicked yet since it started on Raw. I mean the wrestling is great but not as great as it was during the CWC tournament. It almost feels like they were told to tone it down. Also, there is very big lack of character development for the cruiserweight roster. I mean if you aren’t a wrestling fan that is in touch with the independent scene or you didn’t watch the CWC tournament, you’re really not aware of who these guys are or why you should care about them besides they put on good matches. It’s no ones fault, I mean its going to take time before these guys and the division find their groove but right now they’re desperately in need for a guy like Mike Tenay to give us the full 4-1-1 on all these guys and their backgrounds. I don’t if the commentary team is filling me in on Raw, but if they are it’s not effective because I knew where Juventud Guerrera and Dean Malenko’s background pretty well after one match with Tony Schivone getting Tenay to fill us in.
Anyway, as for this match, I think these six men will really impress us and try to prove to us that their cruiserweight’s deserve more than just being a kick off match. A lot of people who don’t watch WWE weekly but are just tuning in for Hell in a Cell are in for a treat. Personally, the heel team of Tony Nese, Drew Gulak and Ariya Daivari seems like the stronger to team to me when it boils down to wrestling ability and charisma, and that’s no knock on Cedric Alexander, Lince Dorado and Sin Cara, who are a charismatic and impressive team themselves, but I feel like the heel team just inches them out because of Sin Cara. In the end though, considering how I see the cruiserweight match later in the show going, I’m going to side with the babyface cruiserweights to pick up the win here.
Prediction – Cedric Alexander, Lince Dorado & Sin Cara
Bayley vs. Dana Brooke
Image via WWE.com
I still question today if Bayley was only called up due to the fear that Sasha Banks may have been injured. I mean she briefly feuded with Charlotte who regained the title from an injured Sasha Banks at Summerslam, which Sasha returned early from. This lead to a triple threat between the three women, but eventually Bayley went to feud with Charlotte’s protegé Dana Brooke as Sasha Banks and Charlotte continued their rivalry. Regardless if it was for that reason or not, its nice to have this secondary women’s feud. I mean with Paige going under surgery, Emma gearing up for return and Nia Jax basically disappearing until I’m assuming after this event, this match rivalry will do.
Dana Brooke hasn’t grown on me a bit. I mean I still think she was called up too early, not that great in the ring and pretty cringe worthy of a character, but that’s just me. I know she is improving. I can see it week after week. I mean there have been the rare moments where I think she did alright, but otherwise she’s lacking something all the other women on the Raw roster have and I’m not sure what it is. Hopefully she can find it. Bayley on the other hand is one of the most popular and talented stars of the women’s division. If anything Bayley is the one who needs to be protected while Sasha and Charlotte finish their rivalry. Unless they’re planning on continuing this feud between Dana and Bayley after Hell in a Cell, I don’t see Dana walking out victorious. I know they both might be on the women’s team for Survivor Series. Therefore, Dana could win and Bayley could gain her momentum back before the next exclusive Raw PPV. Bayley could be the sole survivor or one of the survivors of their team. I just don’t see what having Dana win accomplishes. Dana wins her match and Charlotte loses hers, so this creates tension between them? Thats the only thing that makes sense. Other than that, every other reason makes sense that Bayley walks out victorious.
Prediction – Bayley
Tag Team Championship
The New Day (C) vs. Cesaro & Sheamus
Image via WWE.com
The Club should be the tag team champions and facing Cesaro and Sheamus in this match, but that’s not the case of course. The next thing I’m going to state I have stated many times and I’m going to say it every time I write about The New Day’s tag title reign. They are over as fuck, they are hilarious and they don’t need the tag team titles. The tag titles are just props to their overall shtick. I mean if they didn’t have the tag titles would they be any less over? Nope. I don’t know if it’s just because they want to demolish the Demolition record but it’s really hurting all the rest of Raw’s tag teams besides Enzo and Cass who are over basically due to their charisma alone. Moving onto Cesaro and Sheamus, their best out of seven series turned into them becoming tag team partners. Yeah, the whole wrestling seven times to gain a World Title shot lead to them getting a tag team title shot. The whole them trying to work together even though they dislike each other has been a fun angle, but very forgettable. It doesn’t lessen my feelings for Cesaro ending up on Smackdown eventually. Cesaro should have been drafted there in the first place. As for Sheamus, I don’t care for him much personally, but he deserves better too.
Anyway, now moving forward to my actual prediction. I personally think the New Day will be walking out still your WWE Tag Team Champions. I don’t think predicting it going any other way even makes sense anymore. I mean the creative next step would be forcing Sheamus and Cesaro to continue having to try to get along because they’re the tag team champions. I mean it’s a rehashed storyline we’ve seen time after time the past 20-30 years but its proven to work. However, betting against The New Day at this point just seems stupid. I mean why would they chase this Demolition reign to just have them lose them this Sunday to a team that was thrown together because they had nothing better to do creatively for either guy. The New Day takes the win.
Prediction – The New Day
Cruiserweight Championship
TJ Perkins (C) vs. Brian Kendrick
Image via WWE.com
Brian Kendrick earned a second shot at TJ Perkins cruiserweight championship. Previously, at Clash of Champions The Wizard of Odd wasn’t able to topple Perkins to win the belt. However, the desperation is kicking in for Kendrick, to make this time in the WWE count, as it might be his final run with the company. Desperation changes men, and just like his resemblance to Hugh Glass portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in Revenant, Brian Kendrick will using everything in his arsenal to reach his goal. Perkins the happy young new blood in the WWE wants to leave his mark as the first ever Cruiserweight Champion. Perkins who has known Kendrick since he first started training, hitch rides from him and according to Kendrick, play N64 with, doesn’t understand why Kendrick is acting vicious towards him with desperation to become champion. Is it jealousy or does Kendrick feel like it’s the win that is going to define his career? The last thing to factor in his that Kendrick has beat Perkins on Raw, in a non title match. (Which was initially billed as a title match)
Now I really, really, really want Kendrick to be victorious in this match. TJ Perkins has only defended the title once, and it would be silly for him to lose it in his second defence. Although, there is that whole 50/50 booking thing the WWE does. I mean Perkins won at Clash of Champions. Kendrick beat Perkins on Raw. What does that mean happens in the third match? Does the Cruiserweight Title lose its appeal if Perkins loses it this early? There is a ton of questions and even though my brain and gut are both saying TJ Perkins is going to retain the title because they’re trying to build the Cruiserweight division around him, I have to go with who I want to win this match and that’s Brian Kendrick.
Prediction – Brian Kendrick
The Club vs. Enzo & Cass
Image via WWE.com
In a match with no real rivalry behind it besides maybe the lack of love lost between the two teams from previous altercations and the fact that The Club couldn’t overcome them in the last couple of weeks in singles matches we get Enzo & Cass facing off against Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Instead of a back story, I’m going to jump right into my prediction. The Club needs to win. I mean really what team needs it more. Enzo and Cass are over, similar to the New Day, whether they win or lose. The Club has been losing steam ever since the brand extension and being separated from AJ Styles. While Enzo and Cass have the crowd singing along with their entrance promo when they don’t even have an operating microphone, The Club have been on a losing streak when they’re supposed to be the dominate team that the Raw tag division fears. I don’t just want The Club to win, but they need to win. I mean if circumstances were different and The Club have been tag team champions for the last three to four months like they should have been, I might have been rooting for Enzo and Cass but thats not the case.
Prediction – The Club
United States Championship
Roman Reigns (C) vs. Rusev w/ Lana
Image via WWE.com
Honestly, this match has a lot of potential to be better than everyone’s expectations. I mean last year while everyone was too busy hating Roman Reigns, he put on a great cell match against Bray Wyatt. Personally, I’ve really enjoyed this feud. Rusev’s time being US Champion again rebuilt him to be a force to reckon with. Roman stepping back and feuding with Rusev keeping him out of the Universal Title scene has made Roman tolerable again in my mind. The rivalry started off kind of silly with Roman crashing Rusev and Lana’s wedding celebration but has grown to become pretty personal and heated between the two big men. I know usually the cell is the match that comes into play to blow off a feud but I still think it’s just another chapter in the Rusev and Reigns feud. These two are both powerful and full of agility and I think we’ll see both attributes come in play.
However, when it comes to who I think will be walking out with the United States Champion. As much as I would Rusev regain the title one day, this Sunday is not that day. Maybe this rivalry will end with Rusev regaining the United States title but I think it’s too early to take it off Roman Reigns. Roman Reigns being an effective US Champion and defending it as if it’s the Universal Title would make the title feel more important. I’m not saying when Rusev had the title it didn’t make the title seem important, but it takes a babyface defending it with pride and honour to make the championship feel special. I expect a brutal, full of impact and surprisingly good match between Roman and Rusev with Roman Reigns walking out still your United States Champion.
Prediction – Roman Reigns
Hell in a Cell
Women’s Title
Sasha Banks (C) vs. Charlotte
Image via WWE.com
History is being made when two women meet in the devils structure for the first time in WWE history. If the WWE was shooting for equality and making sure the women of the New Era aren’t a bathroom break anymore, they did a pretty good job making people pay attention to this one. I mean you got two of the most talented and athletic women on the roster today. Two of the very popular, history making Four Horsewomen that have worked against each other time and time again in the past 3 years. If this was the blow off to their rivalry (for the time being) than it makes perfect sense that its in the cell. I’m curious if Sasha Banks would have been champion the entire time if there wasn’t the injury scare but I didn’t mind Charlotte winning the title back and Sasha reclaiming it on Raw again. It added depth to this rivalry and the championship was the centre focus of the feud. Nonetheless, building up to this match, the rivalry felt less personal but more about making history, making Ric Flair and Eddie Guerrero proud, Foley’s historic cell memories and living up to their nicknames as “The Boss” and “The Queen”. I totally understand that this is a historic moment in womens wrestling and the WWE so they should milk the shit out of it but I wish heading into the cell the women were more aggressive towards each other on a personal level with the ambition to hold that Raw Women’s Championship. It is almost as if the title is non existent in this build up. Realistically you could remove the title from rivalry and the build up to the specific match wouldn’t be any different.
Now for my prediction, Sasha Banks retains her Women’s Title walking out of the Hell in the Cell as champion. I mean Charlotte is apart of this historic moment and had her history making achievements already. Lets not forget that Charlotte is the first ever Women’s Champion of its new lineage and the last ever Divas Champion. Charlotte is also the first ever NXT Women’s Champion. Charlotte won her first ever Wrestlemania match. Charlotte is the first ever two time Women’s Champion. Sasha Banks deserves this defining moment as the first women to win a Hell in a Cell match. I know Sasha Banks has her historic moments too. Stealing the show with Bayley at NXT Brooklyn, the first ever Ironwomen match and being involved along with Charlotte to main event Raw, a feat that has only been done three times by the women in the WWE to name a couple, but she deserves this one.
I hope Charlotte moves on to get involved in the Bayley/Dana feud unless she actually is taking some time off. I would hold off Bayley/Sasha for Mania time and would love to see Sasha have to overcome Nia Jax next. I also really hope, even though I know they can’t control it, that these girls hold back their tears until they get backstage. I hope they don’t hug or anything after the match until they get backstage. I want to continue believing they hate each other so when they revisit this feud one day, we feel like there is still no love lost. I am really looking forward to this match and I know these two women can deliver. I just hope neither of them get hurt, where they have to take time off. I’ll be devastated. Overall, Sasha Banks retains the Women’s Championship.
Prediction – Sasha Banks
Hell in a Cell
WWE Championship
Kevin Owens (C) vs. Seth Rollins
Image via WWE.com
Once again, these are two of my top 5 favourite stars of the New Era, yet their rivalry feels flat. It’s still because of the main element that sparked their rivalry has been non existent, in Triple H. These two began feuding when Triple H screwed Rollins and chose Owens as the new chosen one in the Fatal-Four-Way to crown a new champion and has been nowhere to be seen since. Instead, Kevin Owens’ best friend Chris Jericho has been the focal point of the rivalry between Owens and Rollins. Although, it has been entertaining, mainly because Jericho is one hell of an entertainer, without Triple H this entire rivalry seems scattered. The Universal Title barley seems important but merely a small factor to why these two are feuding, because its barley been mentioned that couple of weeks. If anything if almost feels like they’re fighting over how Chris Jericho should feel and his List of Jericho. On that note, I think it is safe to say that Chris Jericho will be involved in this match in some fashion. If Rusev and Reigns is gonna be exceptionally good. Sasha and Charlotte is going to be historic and a showcase for women’s wrestling. Then I figure it’ll be okay if this match is overbooked, right?
Moving forward, I predict that Kevin Owens will walk out the Universal Champion still. Whether it be because of Chris Jericho or Triple H, Kevin Owens will still be the Universal Champion and it will be because of Rollins getting screwed. I imagine Survivor Series would feature a triple threat between the three men or somehow lead to a Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens feud while Rollins fights for Team Raw against his will and lack of trust in Stephanie. The other route they could go is having Jericho cost Owens the title but I don’t see Rollins winning the championship again. I don’t see Triple H just letting that happen after his initial involvement to prevent that from happening in the first place. I think Rollins gets screwed and the mind games continue. Jericho will play a role but maybe not as big as he did at Clash of Champions or leading to this match.
I’m just hoping leading to the next Universal Title match, the focus is more on being champion. As of right now the Universal Title has just been a prop to a bigger story, but needs to be focal point to seem prestigious and equal to the WWE Championship which already has a rich history. The Universal Title is still too new to just be prop. I’d love for that to change during Kevin Owens’ reign as champion.
Prediction – Kevin Owens
