WWE Superstars Review 06/10/2016
In the travesty of the century, there is no Summer Rae on Superstars this week. They must have heard me call her the Queen of Superstars. However we do have the King of Superstars, Zack Ryder!
Match #1
Sin Cara vs Viktor
So they took away Viktor’s awesome red face paint and he’s back to the Ascension themed one. First no Summer, now no Viktor facepaint. Here, WWE, take my kidney while you’re at it, you’ve taken everything else away. But seriously, getting back to the match. Sin Cara overwhelms Viktor with his speed early on and gets a near fall. Tom brings up the 2+ year rivalrly between Ascension and Lucha Dragons. Some sharp uppercuts and chops by Viktor. Sin Cara with a headscissors whip out of the corner. Viktor flapjacks Sin Cara into the corner and hits a spinning uppercut. Viktor tries to rip off Sin Cara’s mask and locks in a headlock. Sin Cara breaks out, dodges a clothesline and hits a springboard moonsault from the second rope. Viktor with some hard kicks to the body of Sin Cara. Back to the headlock from Viktor. Sin Cara manages to school boy roll-up Viktor into a powerbomb. 2nd rope springboard crossbody followed by a 2nd rope springboard back elbow. That very well could be Carlito under that mask. Sin Cara suicides dives on Viktor on the outside. Viktor goes for a powerbomb but Sin Cara bounces off the rope in the air, turning it into a huracanrana with a pin for the victory.
Thoughts
It definitely wasn’t a bad match, but I didn’t really get too much out of it either. Viktor didn’t really do as much extra stuff as he usually does wasn’t as good a heel as he was the last two weeks. Also I feel like Sin Cara’s mask restricts his ability to play an underdog face because of the lack of facial expressions. At least with guys like Mysterio and Kalisto you can still see the emotion. After watching Ryder and Swagger play the face in peril extremely well the last two weeks, I felt like Sin Cara wasn’t able to show the emotion and desperation that they did. Match definitely picked up towards the end and even though it wasn’t particularly good, it wasn’t bad either.
For the recaps this week we get the Seth Rollins video package from Raw, the AJ Styles/John Cena promo from Raw and the ending of Enzo/Cass vs Vaudevillians from Raw.
Match #2
Zack Ryder & Dolph Ziggler vs The Dudley Boyz
Ryder gets distracted by Bubba Ray almost immediately, allowing D-Von to attack. Bubba Ray starts talking trash the second the bell rings and two minutes he hasn’t stopped yet. Bubba is beating down Ryder in the corner and tells a fan to “Sit down, fatty!”. This man is a legend. Bubba whips Ryder from corner to corner but as he runs in, Ryder catches him with double knees and its a dropkick from the second rope. Ryder hit the Broski Boot to Bubba as we go to commercial. Bubba sets up Ryder for the WAZZUP but he’s extremely far away. Ryder rolls through, putting Bubba in positions. D-Von goes to get down but Ziggler shoves him off, right into Bubba’s crotch. Ryder hits a neckbreaker and heads to the top but Bubba shakes the ropes. D-Von slams Ryder into the barricade outside the ring.
Leg drop from D-Von for two. Bubba gets in and tells Ryder that he’s the only one allowed to have a beard in this match before punching him in the face. Bubba wrenches each of Ryder’s legs as he continues to yell at him. Out of desperation, Ryder hits a facebuster to Bubba. Dolph gets the hot tag, as does D-Von and Dolph lights him up with clotheslines, a running splash and a neckbreaker. Jumping elbow drop from Dolph. Bubba gets the tag and boots Ziggler in the face after some confusion. Ziggler ducks and D-Von and Bubba run into each other. Ryder drags D-Von out of the ring. Ziggler goes for a Superkick and Bubba catches it. Bubba goes to mock Ziggler but gets Superkicked and Dolph gets the pin.
Thoughts
What an absurdly fun match. Bubba Ray absolutely killed it. His trash talk was godly. Nothing against D-Von but if they get split up in the draft, I want to see Bubba get into the main event scene, just like he was in TNA. He’s not going to hit 5000 moves or do anything insane but he’s just a ridiculously fun wrestler and arguably the best heel in WWE. Also, I’m really hoping that this was testing the waters of a Ziggler/Ryder tag team. I know the tag title scene is a bit congested right now but these two have natural chemistry and both could really benefit from this. They’re both over and the chemistry is already there. This match was extremely fun but I wish it got an extra 5-10 minutes and a more drawn out hot tag.
The show finishes up with the Roman Reigns video package from Raw.
Overall
Another fairly enjoyable episode of Superstars. Viktor/Cara was a decent yet forgettable match, however the tag team main event was extremely fun. Really shows the size of the current roster when you’ve got talent like the Dudleyz and Ziggler on Superstars.
