What’s NeXT?
Well what a big week it was in the world of professional wrestling. I mean bringing the top talent from NXT up to main the roster randomly out of nowhere was a surprise but something I was happy with. Read on if you dare, and listen to some random Australian’s opinion on sports entertainment.
Traditionally, NXT call ups happen on the RAW and Smackdown after Wrestlemania to a huge pop from the “crazy” international crowds (which the commentators remind of us every two seconds with the old classic line “they will cheer for who they usually boo and boo who they usually cheer”).
There certainly weren’t any beach balls on RAW, bloody hell there was barely any sign of life whatsoever from the shithouse Lafayette crowd. I have a little piece of advice for WWE, maybe don’t debut your top 4 best NXT stars on a crowd as shit as Lafayette, maybe give them a city like Philly or Chicago where they would actually make noise.
I know, I know, I should just be happy that they were called up to main roster but I am a wrestling fan, and as a wrestling fan, I get to complain about whatever the fuck I want. I tell you what though, that Aleister Black kid is pretty bloody special isn’t he? He looked right at home up in the big leagues by knocking the heads off both Elias and Andrade with the Black Mass. Has there ever been a better looking kick finisher?
Speaking of Black Mass, the Mark Henry documentary was pretty cool wasn’t it? Fuck that man is strong and he seems like a really nice bloke. All I ask, is just for just one more time, for me to hear the start of that famous song “It’s sexual baby” and see Sexual Chocolate seducing the live audience.
Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi, Kofi! That’s what the whole world seems to be chanting at the moment and dare I say it, he may be the most over person in company right now, overtaking The Man who has cooled off in recent weeks.
If you have been watching wrestling as long as I have (22 years) you will know that Kofi Kingston actually debuted as a Jamaican character complete with a fake accent and cheesy catchphrases. He slowly started to phase out the accent and even captured the US and Intercontinental titles.
The New Day was what really put Kofi on the map of course allowing the audience to see some personality while continuing to just be an incredible performer in the ring without ever getting too much praise. It has always been “yeah Kofi is awesome” but it has never been “yeah Kofi is awesome and he deserves a massive push to become WWE Champion.” It’s like the audience over the last two weeks has gone, “yeah Kofi has entertained us for 11 years, fuck yeah he deserves to win the title and fuck if he doesn’t we are gonna be pissed off!”
Clearly he deserves every bit of attention he is getting right now and no one in the Universe would mind if Kofi won the title at Fastlane and went on to be one the main events at Wrestlemania. Whether or not this happens of course, is still up in the air. WWE likes to keep its plans when it makes them, and I don’t think they factored Mr. Kingston into those plans a couple of months back.
I say, pull the fucking trigger. Let him win the belt at Fastlane where he can drop it back at Wrestlemania to Daniel Bryan, but give him that big one on one singles match that he deserves for going out there and being incredible for over a decade.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, Elimination Chamber was on last week wasn’t it? Well if you want my thoughts on that then the only two matches worth remembering were both Chamber matches.
The Women did a fantastic job and even my fellow countrymen, the Iconics had a really great showing. If you follow my award winning Instagram page (that__wrestling__guy) you will notice that I have been very vocal in my dislike for the Ms Royce and Ms Kaye but I will admit when I see something I liked, and I liked them in this match.
They proved to the world that they are really comfortable with their characters and given some time, can be taken as serious contenders in the ring. Jesus Christ what I am saying? Complimenting people I used to hate? Look out for next week’s “blog” as I write my new found appreciation for Baron Corbin and how much I want him to win the Universal Title!
In closing I want to bring it back to the title of my “blog” this week, what happens next? Well it’s more like what happens to NXT? With rumours swirling about the upcoming Takeover card in New York, it looks like the Ciapma, Ricochet and Black will be permanent members of either RAW or Smackdown. This is of course the assumption the Gargano will finally beat Ciampa for the title it what I am predicting could be the most emotional match you will ever see.
You take any top 4 guys out of organisation and you are going to take a hit for a while. I feel like when anyone gets called up the question is asked, will NXT still be great? This is probably the most I have thought maybe, just maybe, there will be a bad NXT Takeover following Wrestlemania.
In closing closing, (seriously this is the last paragraph) if you were wondering why I type “blog” with quotation marks. It is because I am actually air quoting with my fingers sarcastically because I actually hate the word blog. Say it, say blog, it’s not a nice sounding word. It’s also one letter off the word Bog, which means to take a shit, in Australia.
Have a great week Lunatics!
