TNA Turning Point 2009 Review
Hey guys it is Josh Masterson here to review what is in my opinion one of the best TNA PPVs of all time. However I haven’t watched it in around 2 years so hopefully I still think that by the end.
X-Division Championship
Amazing Red (c) vs Homicide
Both of these guys were at their peak here and this was one of my favorite times in the X-Division. This was a great way to open up the show as both men worked really hard and it paid off. It wasn’t the cleanest match but it was very good fast paced action. Matches like this make me realize that TNA getting rid of the 12 PPV’s a year hurt the X-Division as it forced them to make singles feuds in the division to an extent instead of just doing multi man matches all the time. In 2016 they’ve made some progress in this with with the Spud/Sutter and Lee/Tigre feuds but they still have overdone the multi man matches way too much in recent years. Anyway this was a very good and fun old school X-Division match. ***1/2
Knockouts Championship/Knockouts Tag Team Championship on the line
The Beautiful People (Madison Rayne, Velvet Sky, and Lacey Von Erich) vs ODB, Sarita, and Taylor Wilde
The Beautiful People is probably my favorite faction of all time so it is always fun to watch them. Sarita is great, Taylor Wilde was really good, and this was ODB’s prime. This was a fun match with the faces overcoming the Beautiful People’s heel antics. Lacey did very little which was probably done intentionally. Speaking of Lacey there was a Lacey Von Botch sign in the front row which was great. Sarita and Taylor Wilde looked the best here in ring wise, pretty fun match but nothing special. **1/2
TNA Tag Team Championship
Beer Money vs British Invasion (c) vs Motor City Machine Guns
Beer Money and Motor City Machine Guns are two of the top three best tag teams in TNA history and British Invasion are very much not so the quality of this match pretty much depends on how much involvement there is from British Invasion. This was a fun match with Beer Money and MCMG working together to take down British Invasion. Sadly it got ruined by some dumb stuff with Eric Young and Kevin Nash that led to British Invasion winning. Pretty good match that was hurt a lot by the ending. **1/4
Six Sides of Steel
Tara vs Awesome Kong
I remember last time I watched this I decided that this was one of my favorite womens matches of all time and it did not disappoint when watching again. There were so many great moments like Kong’s missile dropkick, Tara powerbombing Kong, and Tara jumping off the top of the cage. These moments obviously aren’t any like history making spots but the story was so great in this match. It was a hard hitting and awesome match. ***3/4
Team 3D and Rhino vs The Pope, Hernandez, and Matt Morgan
This was a fun tag match thats only flaw was that it went a little too long. The non-ECW alumni team definitely was the stars of the match, with all three of them looking very good (Hernandez less than the other two but he still did well). ***
Falls Count Anywhere
Bobby Lashley vs Scott Steiner
I remember this feud being horrible and while it was this wasn’t that bad. The in ring stuff was decent and while it turned into a pretty typical street fight it was still fine. I still find it weird how now since 2014 Lashley has been one of the best wrestlers on the TNA roster but he was so average and bad in his first TNA run. **1/2
Kurt Angle vs Desmond Wolfe
This was an awesome technical match that did a very good job at telling a story. Wolfe had a counter for pretty much everything Angle went for and it produced a great match. ***3/4
TNA World Heavyweight Championship
AJ Styles (c) vs Samoa Joe vs Christopher Daniels
At this time these were easily three of the best wrestlers in the world. Obviously their match at Unbreakable 2005 is considered to be one of the best matches in TNA or even wrestling history and a lot of the times when promotions try to recreate old magic they fail but this was far from a failure. This was one of the most creative matches I have ever seen, with so many interesting and unique spots between the three men. All three of them completely went all out to produce a fantastic match. ****½
Final Thoughts: This was definitely one of my favorite TNA PPVs ever. There were only a couple matches that weren’t that good but even those weren’t horrible. Very enjoyable show with a lot of great wrestling.
Final Rating: 9/10
